I would like to thank you for a wonderful year - 2009!  Not only am I new to the area, but also teaching in NH at the Paper Moon Dance Studio.  I am greatful for all of your support and it was a pleasure to meet and dance with you.  Whether you joined bellydancing to learn or refine your skills, we hope to see you in 2010 for more bellydance instruction, fun, fitness, and performance!

I'm pleased to announce that we're growing in classes!  In addition to the beginner level classes and all level choreography class, we are now offering an Intermediate class!  This class accomodates the more experienced beginner dancer wanting to learn layers as well as refine their dance and zills skill sets.  Be sure to sign up soon if you are truly interested.

In the choreography class, all students are given the opportunity to perform with Zaira, a solo, or dance with the troupe.  Be sure to let Zaira know if you are interested in dancing or being an audience member in any and all events on the Event Calendar!

We are also please to announce that we will be hosting Sa'diyya of Texas for our special Valentine's workshop!  This is an event you don't want to miss.  She is an amazing performer and instructor.  This is a show you don't want to miss!

Dancing, performing, living, loving, laughing, and having fun is what it is all about.  Thank you for reading The Belly Bulletin and being a part of the bellydance community!

Class Descriptions

Beginner Belly Dance:

Beginner classes are structured to allow students to develop at their own pace. You will learn to develop a sound foundation for belly dancing. Zaira will explore different music and rhythms (i.e., Egyptian, Arabic, Turkish, etc.) that makes this dance so beautiful while learning simple dance combinations. You will build a stronger physical body with flexibility and endurance, learn dance history and feminine artistic expressions, and discover the joy of movement. You will need to master the steps outlined in the beginner classes before moving on to our intermediate belly dance classes. This class includes the introduction of the veil.

 ***New Intermediate Belly Dance:

In this class, you will expand your repertoire of dance steps, rhythm knowledge, and music vocabulary. While learning graceful transitions between moves and fun combinations, you will also learn the framework for building exciting choreographies by enhancing your skills in layering movements, level changes, directional changes, and emphasizing and de-emphasizing movement to match the music. This class includes and introduction to the use of props such as candle and sword.  You will need to master this class before moving into our advanced belly dance class.

 Choreography Class

(Candle Dance with Zills (optional):

Be inspired!  This new bellydance choreography is a classic.  This Winter/Spring 2010 will focus on learning a candle choreography and performance. In this class, you will expand your repertoire of dance steps, rhythm knowledge, music vocabulary, performance, and costuming skills.  You will also learn how to play zills or enhance your current skills.  This is a very exciting choreography class that is sure to provide layering movements, level changes, directional changes, and emphasizing and de-emphasizing movement to match the music.  This class includes an introduction to the use of candles and zills.  This is an all level class; recommended for Intermediate and Advanced students.  Instructor approval needed for enrollment in this class if you are a Beginner.

How to assemble a candle tray….

By Zaira

Ingredients for Tray 1 (with candles):

1 Brass Tray (Circular) or Metallic Plate Charger

2 Large or Medium Unscented White Candles, 5-10 Small candles

5” Diameter Piece of Felt (felt color should be similar to tray)

Glue

Directions:

Cut felt into a circle and glue it to the bottom of the tray.  Be sure to glue the felt in the center of the tray where it will rest on your head.  Brass, especially polished brass, is very slippery.  The felt provides friction between the tray and your hair.  Let the glue cure for 24 hours before proceeding to the next step.

Position the candles on the tray.  Use the picture above as an example.  The large and medium candles are centered on the tray and tray similar to the ones shown in the picture.  Try balancing the tray on your head after positioning the candles to ensure the center of gravity is comfortable.  If one side leans more than the other, try moving the candles so the tray is easy to balance.  Tip: A heavier tray is easier to balance than a light one!

Glue the candles on the tray with hot wax!  Your tray is complete.  Happy dancing!

Dear Genie,

I've recently started bellydancing and would like to buy some music to practice.  What cd's do you recommend getting first?

This is a great question and I recommend purchasing a cd by the Bellydance Superstars.  Any version will do.  These cd's are very diverse and offer students a great selection of rhythms, tempo's, and styles to dance.

Some of my favorite artists include George Abdo, Hossam Ramzy, Cairo Orchestra, and Tarkan for dance music and Uncle Mafufo for learning rhythms.

Would you like to ask the Genie a question?  If so, send all questions to Genie!
