Dancing with Saida of Argentina
by Layla

Last September, I was fortunate enough to attend the 2009 Miami Bellydance Convention (“MBC”) in sunny Florida.  The impetus to attend the convention was the fact that my biggest inspiration in the middle-eastern dance art form, Saida from Argentina, was teaching a workshop for the very first time here in the U.S.  When I heard she was actually going to be here, on American soil, I could hardly contain my excitement!

I stumbled upon Saida several years ago while “you-tubing” belly dance in general. I recall being immediately absorbed by Saida’s captivating beauty and incredibly graceful stage presence. Upon closer inspection, I was further impressed by the fact that she never seemed to sacrifice technique for showmanship.  Her moves, while irresistibly graceful, were impeccably crisp. She immediately struck me as a highly-skilled middle-eastern dancer. Saida, in my opinion, she was the complete packge!

So, who is Saida?  Her birth-given name is Veronica Helou.  She is the daughter of Sirian parents and was born in Argentina, South America where she currently resides.  She is a college graduate and has been dancing for nearly twenty years.  She studied classical dance from 1983 to 1991 at which point she became interested in belly dance.  For over ten years, she danced with a highly prestigious Argentinian dance company and has been featured in countless middle-eastern dance events in Argentina. In 1994, Saida formed her own Bellydance Academy in her native Buenos Aires.  Her school offers a five-year training program spanning from beginner to professional levels. Over the years, her school has grown exponentially currently hosting over 750 students!  Her international career began in 2000 when she began teaching workshops all over South America and Spain. She has been featured in various belly dance instruction DVDs including the Bellydance Superstars.

When Saida appeared at the Miami Bellydance Convention, everyone was completely and utterly “star-struck”.  I knew almost immediately that my trip to Miami would be so worth-while! While tiny in stature, approximately 5’1",  Saida had incredible presence! She was highly energetic, enthusiastic, welcoming, and very gregarious – just a joy to be around. Her workshop included a beautiful modern Egyptian choreography and was packed with detailed breakdown instruction. Her workshop was very-well put together with a lot of attention to professionalism and artistry. I must note however, that there was a bit of a language “barrier” as Saida is not fluent in English.  She did have a translator by her side that proved very helpful for some.  Having said that, what was amazing about her is that she was able to successfully convey her skills mostly, by using body language. She was very consice in her instruction delivery, persistent and yet extremely patient. By the end of the two-hour + workshop, I was craving more!

I can’t wait till MBC 2010 this coming Labor Day weekend!

Class Descriptions

Beginner Belly Dance:

Beginner classes are structured to allow students to develop at their own pace. You will learn to develop a sound foundation for belly dancing. Zaira will explore different music and rhythms (i.e., Egyptian, Arabic, Turkish, etc.) that makes this dance so beautiful while learning simple dance combinations. You will build a stronger physical body with flexibility and endurance, learn dance history and feminine artistic expressions, and discover the joy of movement. You will need to master the steps outlined in the beginner classes before moving on to our intermediate belly dance classes. This class includes the introduction of the veil.

 ***New Intermediate Belly Dance:

In this class, you will expand your repertoire of dance steps, rhythm knowledge, and music vocabulary. While learning graceful transitions between moves and fun combinations, you will also learn the framework for building exciting choreographies by enhancing your skills in layering movements, level changes, directional changes, and emphasizing and de-emphasizing movement to match the music. This class includes and introduction to the use of props such as candle and sword.  You will need to master this class before moving into our advanced belly dance class.

 Choreography Class

(Raqs Sharki with Zills (optional):

Be inspired!  This new bellydance choreography is a classic.  This Spring/Summer 2010 will focus on learning a traditional Raqs Sharki routine. In this class, you will expand your repertoire of dance steps, rhythm knowledge, music vocabulary, performance, and costuming skills.  You will also learn how to play zills or enhance your current skills.  This is a very exciting choreography class that is sure to provide layering movements, level changes, directional changes, and emphasizing and de-emphasizing movement to match the music. This is an all level class; recommended for Intermediate and Advanced students.  Instructor approval needed for enrollment in this class if you are a Beginner.

THE BELLY DANCER’S PRAYER
By Author Linda Graves, aka Layla Hazine

www.lindagraves.com

“Now as I go out to show by Grace,
Please don’t let me fall on my face.

With the Choreography so fresh in my mind,
I pray, Oh Lord, “Don’t let it fall behind.

May my Bra stay put, my belt stay tight?
May my skirt stay down and not take flight.

My veil is my friend, so I have been told.
Please, let this be true, or it may be sold.

Please help keep my sword straight and true.
My new choreography, Oh No! Give me a clue!

Lord, help me make it through the show tonight.
May I perform and sway my hips just right?

May the audience be generous with their applause and money?
And never may I hear, 'Take it off, Honey!'

The music is starting. My heart starts to thump.
My throat is dry, I think I swallowed a lump.

My time has come to share my dance
Be with me Lord, This is my Big Chance.”

Dear Genie,

I've recently started bellydancing and I'm having trouble maintaining my shimmy.  Do you have any advice that may help?

The Hip Shimmy

Remember the hip shimmy comes from the knees and the hips do no work at all.  Maintaining a hip shimmy involves controlling the hips with a rhythmic movement of the knees.  I recommend drilling shimmies regularly to build those leg muscles, speed, and duration.  As you drill, you will start to firm the leg muscles that generate and maintain control of the shimmy motion.  Once these muscles are stronger, it will be easier to "train" your legs to move in a steady rhythmic motion and maintain that gorgeous shimmy!

Try to keep the range of motion between a soft knee and a bent knee; do not fully straighten the leg.  Start out slow and work on quality first.  Next, work on maintaining your slow shimmy!  As you increase your speed, be sure to maintain an equal amount of motion for each hip movement.  Try to keep your shimmies centered (up and down) and not out.

The key is to relax and build your shimmy stamina by drilling this movement everyday!  It is also key to keep the hips moving up and down consistently too.

Luv Genie!
